Kene is the Director of AMSHeR and has overall responsibility for the organisation’s strategy, policy, programmes and operations. Under Kene’s stewardship, AMSHeR has made significant contributions to promoting non-discrimination and advances to quality and health services for MSM/LGBT individuals in Africa.

A Barrister-at-Law with experience of providing legal aid and advocacy for various marginalised communities including unaccompanied/separated children, refugees and asylums, survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and sexual minorities on the African continent, Kene is interested in investigating the role of national and regional human rights institutions and mechanisms in the protection of minority groups, as well as the intersection of religion, culture and human rights. Prior to his career as a human rights lawyer, Kene had stints in criminal law practice and the military.

Kene serves on several Boards and Committees including the International Steering Committee of the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa [ICASA]. He is a member of the International AIDS Society, the International Bar Association and the IBA Human Rights Institute. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Law [LL.D] degree at the University of Pretoria.
